Retinal Consultants is one of the premiere retinal subspecialty groups in the country, providing outstanding care for the Northern California Valley for over 30 years.
As a group of highly specialized eye surgeons, we are devoted to providing the highest level of care for all types of vitreoretinal illnesses.
In addition to providing expert care for more common disorders such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, macular holes and age-related macular degeneration, we provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and therapy for many complex diseases. Our practice is continually evolving to provide you with the latest treatments available.
The Retinal Consultants Medical Group was established in 1975 by the first fellowship-trained retina specialist in Sacramento, Neil Kelly MD. As the practice grew, Dr. Kelly recruited another retina specialist, Jim Wells MD, to join him in 1978. In 1982, Tom Salzano MD, opened the second retina-only practice in Sacramento near Mercy San Juan Hospital in the northern part of the city. Both practices merged in 1985 upon the recruitment of Robert Wendel MD, the fourth Retinal Consultant. Encouraged by the local community, the practice opened its first office outside of Sacramento in 1987, located in Stockton. With the arrival of Arun Patel MD in 1989, the practice continued to thrive. Drs. Kelly, Wells, and Salzano have since retired, but the group has grown to seven doctors with the addition of Joel Pearlman MD PhD, J. Brian Reed MD, Robert Equi MD, Tony Tsai MD, and Margaret Chang MD MS. The Retinal Consultants have also grown to serve much of Northern California, with nine offices in 2010 and more locations planned.
